Known as a seaside holiday resort on the coast of the Tyrrheanian Sea, Forte dei Marmi takes its name from the homonymous blockhouse located in the centre of the city and wanted by the Grand Duke Leopoldo to defend the landing, and from the marbles that were brought from Apuan Alps to the quay for being carried by sea.
Forte dei Marmi was the scene of birth for the Princess Paola Ruffo di Calabria, born on the 11th September 1937 and since 1993 Queen of Belgium. This resort of the society life in Versilia with several clubs, discos and similar places, is a summer meeting point for many protagonists of national and international finance, sporty champions and famous VIPs.
