Residence Colombo is located in Viareggio, an Italian municipality of 64,564 inhabitants of the Province of Lucca in Tuscany.
The city traces its roots back to the first half of the 16th century when it represented the only gate to the sea for the Republic of Lucca. To this historical period belongs the oldest city building, known as Torre Matilde, a defensive fortress built by people from Viareggio in 1541 to fight the constant menace of the corsair incursions.
Viareggio is known both as a seaside resort and as the home of the Carnival, created in 1873, with its papier-mâché floats, which parade along the promenade known as “Passeggiata a mare”. The official Mask of the Carnival of Viareggio is Burlamacco, invented in 1930 by Uberto Bonetti. During this famous and important event, there are also collateral district parties that usually take place from Fridays to Sundays.
From an artistic point of view, Viareggio is known for eclectic, liberty and déco architecture and for being the city of artists such as Lorenzo Viani, Federico Bagnoli, Alfredo Catarsini, Renato Santini, Mario Marcucci, Eugenio Pardini, Inaco Biancalana, Galileo Chini, Alfredo Belluomini, Giorgio Michetti and Luisa Cellai.
The city is an active industrial and craft centre, expecially in the field of shipbuilding industry for a long time known all over the world. It is also famous for fishing and floriculture.
In Viareggio take place many prize-givings and events such as the Viareggio Répaci Literary Prize, established on 1929, the Viareggio Sport Prize established on 1985 and the Viareggio World Carnival Cup, established on 1949.
It is also worth noting the Gaber Festival that honours Giorgio Gaber and attracts top names from the Italian musical scene (since 2004).
Viareggio is also known in the historical and religious field, among the most important event is that one of Sant’Antonio Maria Pucci and Clelia Merloni.
Viareggio is also known as the birth place of many famous people, such as the film maker Mario Monicelli, the actress Stefania Sandrelli, the coach of the Italian national football team (winner of the World Cup in 2006) Marcello Lippi, and the actor/anchorman Marco Columbro.
